Collection: Medik8 Cleansers & Toners

Medik8 cleansers and toners formulated to remove makeup, SPF, and impurities without compromising the skin barrier. From oil-based first cleansers to PHA and BHA toning solutions, this range provides the essential foundation for every clinical skincare routine — ensuring your actives penetrate clean, properly prepped skin.

The Foundation of Every Great Routine Starts with Clean Skin

Cleansing is the most underestimated step in clinical skincare. Without thorough cleansing, your actives — vitamin C, retinoids, peptides — simply cannot penetrate effectively. Medik8's cleansers and toners are formulated to remove makeup, SPF, and environmental debris without stripping the skin barrier, leaving a perfectly prepped canvas for your treatment products.

As an Independent Nurse Prescriber, I see the difference proper cleansing makes every day. Patients who double cleanse in the evening and use a toning step consistently get better results from their actives — faster, more evenly, and with fewer irritation issues. This range from Medik8 covers every skin type: oil-based cleansers for the first cleanse, gentle formulations for sensitive skin, and acid-based toners that refine and prepare. These products form the essential first step in the CSA philosophy.

The Perfect Double Cleanse

For the most effective evening routine, start with Lipid-Balance Cleansing Oil to dissolve SPF, makeup, and oil-based debris, then follow with Gentle Cleanse to remove any remaining impurities. This two-step method ensures your retinoids and treatment serums work on truly clean skin — not on top of residual film.

Medik8 Press & Glow — Daily Exfoliating PHA Toner

If I had to pick one product from this range that transforms routines overnight, it's Press & Glow. This PHA-based toner provides gentle daily exfoliation that sweeps away dead skin cells and primes the skin for better active absorption — without the irritation of traditional AHA toners. I recommend it to every patient as the bridge between cleansing and treatment. Apply it after cleansing, before your vitamin C in the morning or retinoid at night, and you'll notice smoother texture and more even tone within weeks.

  • PHA (Polyhydroxy Acid)

The hero ingredient in Press & Glow. PHAs are next-generation exfoliating acids with a larger molecular structure than AHAs, meaning they exfoliate the surface without penetrating deep enough to cause irritation. They also attract moisture, making them ideal for sensitive or reactive skin that still needs regular exfoliation for better active absorption.

  • Salicylic Acid (BHA)

The active in Press & Clear. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, meaning it penetrates into pores to dissolve sebum plugs and prevent breakouts at the source. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, making it effective for congested, oily, and acne-prone skin without excessive drying.

  • Squalane & Lipid Complex

The foundation of the Lipid-Balance Cleansing Oil. Squalane mimics the skin's own sebum, dissolving oil-based impurities (SPF, makeup, pollution) without disrupting the lipid barrier. This makes it the perfect first cleanse — thorough removal without that tight, stripped feeling that damages the moisture barrier.

  • Rosemary Leaf Extract

A natural antioxidant and soothing agent found in the Gentle Cleanse formulation. Rosemary extract provides anti-inflammatory benefits while protecting the skin from oxidative stress during cleansing. It helps maintain a calm, balanced complexion — particularly beneficial for those with sensitivity or rosacea.

How to Cleanse & Tone — AM & PM

Morning: Gentle Cleanse (or just water if skin is dry) → Press & Glow toner → Vitamin C serum → Moisturiser → SPF 30+

Evening: Lipid-Balance Cleansing Oil (1st cleanse, on dry skin) → Gentle Cleanse (2nd cleanse) → Press & Clear (if oily/acne-prone) OR Press & Glow (all other skin types) → Retinoid → Night moisturiser

Tip: Always apply your oil cleanser to dry skin and massage for 60 seconds before emulsifying with water. This gives the oil time to properly dissolve SPF and makeup. Follow immediately with your water-based second cleanse while skin is still damp.

Cleansers & Toners — Frequently Asked Questions

Why is double cleansing important?

Double cleansing uses two different types of cleanser in sequence. The first (oil-based) dissolves oil-soluble debris like SPF, makeup, and excess sebum. The second (water-based) removes water-soluble impurities like sweat and environmental pollutants. A single cleanser cannot effectively remove both types of debris, which is why double cleansing in the evening is the gold standard in clinical skincare — it ensures your treatment products work on genuinely clean skin.

What is the difference between Press & Glow and Press & Clear?

Press & Glow uses PHA (polyhydroxy acid) for gentle daily exfoliation — it's suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin, and focuses on smoothing texture and improving radiance. Press & Clear uses salicylic acid (BHA), which is oil-soluble and penetrates into pores to clear congestion. Choose Press & Clear if you have oily, congested, or acne-prone skin; choose Press & Glow for everything else — dry, normal, combination, or sensitive skin.

Do I need to cleanse in the morning?

It depends on your skin type. If you have oily or combination skin, a gentle morning cleanse removes overnight sebum and allows your vitamin C and SPF to absorb better. If your skin is dry or sensitive, a splash of lukewarm water may be enough — over-cleansing can strip an already compromised barrier. Either way, the evening double cleanse is non-negotiable for removing the day's SPF and environmental debris.

Can I use these cleansers with retinoids and prescription products?

Absolutely. In fact, proper cleansing is critical when using active ingredients like retinoids, vitamin C, or prescription treatments. These products need to penetrate clean, unobstructed skin to work effectively. Medik8's cleansers are formulated to be pH-balanced and barrier-friendly, so they won't sensitise or disrupt the skin before you apply your actives. The Gentle Cleanse is particularly well-suited for retinoid users who may have increased sensitivity.

How does the Lipid-Balance Cleansing Oil work on oily skin?

It may seem counterintuitive, but oil cleansers are excellent for oily skin. The principle of 'like dissolves like' means the squalane-based oil effectively dissolves excess sebum and pore-clogging oils far more thoroughly than a foaming wash alone. It rinses clean without leaving residue, and by not stripping the skin's natural oils, it actually helps regulate sebum production over time. Follow with Gentle Cleanse and Press & Clear for the most effective oily-skin cleansing protocol.
